What is the D/L method of scoring in football (soccer)?

The D/L method, or Duckworth-Lewis method, is actually not applicable to football or soccer, but rather it's used in cricket. It's a mathematical formulation designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited overs cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances. So, if you're trying to figure out how scoring works in football, this method won't help you much.
